Pre-Prosthetic Surgery Danville

Setting the Stage for Your New Smile

Pre-prosthetic surgery is often needed before the placement of dentures or dental implants. It ensures the jaw is shaped in a way that the replacement teeth will fit comfortably and securely in the mouth. We’ll discuss whether this is necessary at your initial consultation. With this approach, you can look forward to a stable, secure, and attractive smile you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Alveoplasty

The alveolar bone is the medical term for the part of the jaw that supports the teeth. It may be necessary following tooth extraction or due to bone resorption that has made it irregularly shaped, which would prevent a denture or dental implants from being placed properly. This procedure involves modifying the bone to smooth the area, creating a much better environment for the new teeth. It also facilitates healing after extractions or placement of implants.

Exostosis Removal

An exostosis is a benign bone growth that can develop on the jawbone. Based on their location, they can prevent the fitting of a denture, so their removal is often a necessary first step in restoring a patient’s teeth and oral function.

Lingual/Palatal Tori Removal

Tori are small, bony growths that can appear on the inside of the jawbone facing the tongue (lingual) or on the roof of the mouth (palatal). Depending on their size and placement, a straightforward procedure to remove them often precedes a patient receiving a denture so the prosthetic has a smoother, more stable surface to fit over, leading to better strength and retention.
