Intraoral Incision & Drainage

A dental abscess or aggressive oral infection, when left untreated, can lead to serious complications, including difficulty breathing or swallowing. Dr. Sarcos’s extensive medical and surgical training make her uniquely qualified to handle these situations with intraoral incision and drainage. The process involves making a small incision at the site of the infection after the mouth is numbed and sometimes draining the area with a small rubber tube that’s temporarily placed to keep the area open and ensure the infection clears completely.

Expose & Bond (Impacted Tooth/Canine Treatment)

When a tooth fails to erupt properly and becomes impacted beneath the gumline, an expose and bond procedure can help guide it into its correct position. During the procedure, a small surgical opening is made to access the impacted tooth, and a small fixture (often a very tiny chain) is carefully bonded onto it. This chain applies gentle pressure over time, gradually coaxing the tooth into proper alignment.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Medical Management

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition affecting the trigeminal nerve, which is the cranial nerve responsible for sensation of the face, providing the feeling of touch, pain, and temperature. This condition often causes sudden, severe facial pain triggered by everyday activities like eating, speaking, or even a light touch. Dr. Sarcos can thoroughly evaluate all your symptoms and come up with a custom treatment plan that helps you live pain-free. Often, the first course of action for treating it is medical management using nerve pain medications or muscle relaxants.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) Medical Management

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, commonly known as TMD, is a condition affecting one or both of the hinge-like joints that connect the jaw to the skull. It often causes chronic pain, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, myofascial pain, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. Untreated, it might also start to impact dental health by causing damage to the teeth or straining the jaw muscles. Medical management of TMD focuses on relieving uncomfortable symptoms and reducing inflammation, which may involve anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDS if not contraindicated), muscle relaxants, scheduled routine massage of problem muscles, heat application, and likely recommendation of nightguard use.

Frenectomies

A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure that involves removing or modifying the frenum, the small band of tissue that connects the lips or tongue to the surrounding structures of the mouth. When this tissue is too tight or restricts movement, it can contribute to a tongue or lip tie, a gap between the front teeth, difficulty nursing in infants, or problems with speech and oral hygiene. Dr. Sarcos can perform frenectomies right here in our Danville office, and the procedure can immediately improve comfort and oral function simultaneously.
